Liberation Theology

  • 1960s-1970s
  • emerges in Latin American Catholicism
  • Grounded in Gospels and Acts
    • emphasizes Jesus’ care for the poor and marginal
    • Beatitudes (Luke) - blessed are the poor, meek, etc.
    • reversal (first shall come last mentality), raise up the poor
      • central idea to liberation theology
** God has a preferential option for the poor ** (God is biased towards the poor)
