The Benedictines Who Brew Beer

This is a group of monks that I've actually taken students to meet on study abroad. They are a relatively new community living in Norcia, the birthplace of St. Benedict. For the most part these monks are young and many are actually from the U.S. One monk we talked with one year had a been a fraternity brother at the University of the South! Like we talked about in class, monastic communities find ways of supporting themselves financially, including through the brewing of beer.

  1. I really love this and think it is so interesting. Especially with cloistered religious orders, people tend to categorize them and assume they are just a bunch of people who live on their own and pray all day. This story, however, shows exactly the opposite. While they do maintain a life devout in prayer, they are also able to do something I assume most people find pretty cool: brewing beer. This neat video shows just one way that religious people are actually much more like "normal" people than you think.
