Ablution and Absolve
So yesterday someone mentioned the possibility of a linguistic connection between ablution and absolve, the former referring to washing and purification by water and the latter referring to being released from sin. It struck me later in the day that there is a linguistic connection, which is the prefix "ab." "Ab" generally means away from. It is related to the Greek prefix "apo" which also means away from. An ablution is literally a washing away. I think, perhaps, "lu" evokes the Greek to wash or let go "luo." (That's my guess.) Absolve comes from the Latin "solvere," which means to loosen, so literally it is "loosening sins or guilt away" (my definition).
FYI: I love philology and etymology.
